An afternoon walk

I focus a lot on A and homeschooling on this blog, but Little W and I have a lot of fun together too.

It's been beautiful here in Montana. Highs in the 40s and 50s and its February! So of course we have been taking advantage of it. Tuesday just W and I went out for a walk. At the end of our street is open prairie. It is just perfect!

Little W was feeling especially photogenic and let me snap lots of pics on this perfect afternoon.

It's hard to believe he's already 19 months old! Where has the time gone?

He's fascinated with everything. He's all boy and ALWAYS on the go.

Taking this walk alone with him brought back memories of spending my days the same way with A many years ago. It made me smile and remember to take time out and cherish it all because time moves so quickly.
Enjoy every moment y'all!

Ancient Greece

As I mentioned in my last post, we spent a few weeks covering Ancient Greece with our 6th grade Oak Meadow curriculum and had a lot of fun!

A learned about many different aspects of Ancient Greek society. The role of women was of particular interest to her and she wrote this paper focusing on it.

She researched the Greek Alphabet and learned to write her name! Very cool.

I remember learning about the different types of Greek columns and architecture in school and it was exciting to watch A do the same. She drew this Greek temple for one of her assignment choices.

Life was very different for children growing up in Sparta. They belonged to the state, and at 7 boys went to live in camps to train in the art of fighting. A was asked to write a letter from a Spartan boy's point of view. I love how she decided it would be his birthday and extrapolated from her research that no one in camp would know or care.

I can't say enough how much I love the project choices in Oak Meadow! They let her express her creativity and knowledge in so many ways!

Ancient Greek pottery project

We are still loving Oak Meadow Ancient Civilizations. We are only on week 17 because we like to delve deeper when the urge strikes us. Here was one of those times. Studying Ancient Greece, we dove deeper into Grecian pottery. A watched several YouTube videos, researched in our Ancient World encyclopedia, and finally came up with her own design.

She constructed her vase from a balloon and cardboard. Once she had the basic shape down, she began the paper mâché process.

She let it dry over night and the next day added the handles and gave it another coat of paper mâché.

On the third day she painted her vase the classic red clay color and again let it dry over night.

Finally she created her design with black acrylic paint. The finish product is now proudly displayed in our school room!
