Spring photo shoot

A Southern Spring....bright greens, robin egg blue skies, and soft breezes...perfect for picture taking and picnics LOL. My mom snapped this one of A and I with my new haircut in her backyard our first day here.

Monday we went to Norton Art Gallery and had a picnic and our spring photo shoot! It was a blast and just beautiful, warm, and sunny. I have not felt the sun warm my skin for so long!

A took this one of my mom and I as soon as we got to Norton's. Then it was my turn to start snapping away.

The azaleas were absolutely beautiful. Such a refreshing change from the white snow of Dutch Harbor.

A perfect day!

A Spring Day

I had been meaning to post these before we left on vacation, but time got away from me. The first full day of Spring was a beautiful day in Unalaska, and we fully took advantage of it. We spent a good bit of the day playing outside. It was gorgeous, cold, but almost no wind which is rare. I am definitely enjoying the southern spring right now on our vacation, but truly there is nothing more beautiful than the snow covered mountains on a clear day.

Happy Spring!

The countdown is on....4 days!

Be forewarned...it is late, I am tired, and I am totally not re-reading this after I write it- so if there are typos and ramblings, well you know what I am trying to say.... right? LOL

4 days until Kookie and I leave the snow, winds, and blizzards behind us and find ourselves in the midst of a beautiful southern spring!

That's right....we are headed on vacation. Back to Louisiana and the beautiful sun, warm weather, and spring flowers. It can't come soon enough. As I type it is blowing hard outside. The house has been shaking all day and if you have never endured sustained hurricane force winds for days at a time, the noise can not be described. It is 18 degrees outside right now, but feels well below zero. Driving down or up our hill is treacherousness to say the least. Thankfully the road crews have been working overtime this winter, but I can not count the number of times I have faced near white out conditions, slid down the mountain, or gotten stuck in a snow drift this winter. This winter has been hard. We have had a massive amount of snow, on the ground, since before Christmas. Just this weekend we woke up to another 6+ inches over night, after having spent the previous evening shoveling the driveway.

I love snow. I love winter. But honestly, I am finally tired of it and so ready for a break. I am ready to be outside, feel the warm blast of air when I step outside, and see green! I have not seen green since September. Ansley is excited too. She can't wait to be able to go to the park and swing. The swings here have been buried by snow, or if not, the snow is so high under them that you can't dangle your legs down. She is looking forward to fast food. That rare once a year treat that occurs when we leave the island. Being 800 airmiles from the nearest McDonalds is not exactly cool when you are a 5 year old LOL. She has a list of places to go... "McDonalds, Burger King, Chuck-E-Cheese, the duck pond, sci-port, the alligator farm, the zoo" It will be a busy trip trying to fit it all in, but oh so hard not to try my best to oblige her when it will be another year before she has the chance again.

So on Friday we fly out...God willing. The weather here is so unpredictable and today no flights were able to make it I am sure. So please pray for weather to cooperate. And God willing we will be in Texas by early afternoon Saturday. A 4 hour drive to my mom's and our vacation can officially begin. 2 days of flying is tiring, but it will be well worth it.

This week we are busy preparing. I taught my last art class today for a month, and the kids were wonderful as always. And they and their parent's surprised me with a wonderfully sweet card with beautiful notes in it and a $100 gift card for me to use on my trip. I teared up reading what they wrote. I love teaching this group of kids and I love that it gives my daughter the opportunity to get together with her friends.

A has two get togethers with friends this week before we leave, and I need to pack sometime. Although I really don't have to many clothes to bring that will work in almost 90 degree weather, so I guess a little shopping will be in order when we arrive.

For now I am headed to bed. But a quick update on the school front. I will try to post pics when the weather is better and the satellite internet actually lets me upload some pictures.

A has been studying cells this past week. She made a model of an animal cell, a plant cell, discussed the structure of each and created venn diagrams comparing the parts of each type of cell. This week we are studying the processes of diffusion and osmosis and today we did an experiment to demonstrate diffusion. Tomorrow we are demonstrating osmosis in a quick experiement and then talking about the different stages of cell reproduction and looking at onion skin under the microscope to see what stages we can see. I picked up a middle school science textbook from the library which she is devouring. Which has got me looking for curriculum for next year and currently it looks like we will be doing middle school chemistry and earth science. She wants to finish out this year with cells, genetics and DNA, and after that "I want to study prosthetics." This is her new area of interest since watching Dolphin Tale. I have to say, I love homeschooling because with her leading and us following her passions, I learn so much myself. Amazing!

Good night for now.

More birthday pics

So the night before my sweet girls birthday Dh and I spent 3 plus hours putting together the playmobil school.
This was her big present, the thing she had desperately been wanting, but which I told her honestly at the time that we could not do right now.
But amazingly I hit a huge playmobil sale and scored free shipping, which to this island is quite a feat!
So I knew that her surprise would be genuine,,,
But this face was priceless! She was so surprised.
This was the hug that she graced me with. Nothing better than this smile.

One happy child, a wonderful birthday, and a really cool toy that mommy likes playing with too!

Sick but happy child

So after a busy weekend of birthday activities, A has succumbed to the crud that has been running rampant on our little island. Monday morning she was fine, by afternoon when she came home from art class she looked miserable, and had spiked a temp of over 102. My poor baby was miserable. Loaded up on medicines, fluids, movies, books, and pillow pets, she settled in to recuperate. Today was better, still a fever but lower, and she definitely was more to her normal self. She still spent a good portion of the day relaxing, reading a lot of books, and creating scenes in her room.

I am thankful that at least she was well for all her birthday activities, and I am really thankful for the friendships she is forging lately. She spent the entire afternoon Sunday with a friend...playing playmobil, creating scenes, reading books, and scraping their cheeks with tooth pics to analyze their cells under the microscopes we have. A told me that it finally feels like her friends fit her like her clothes fit her. Many of you will remember this analogy she shared with the developmental psychologists when she was almost 4 "I just want friends that fit me like my clothes fit me, but all of my friends fit me like too small clothes", and his response of "Of course they don't fit her. Would you put a 2nd grader in a class of preschoolers and expect the 2nd grader to find great friend fits? No! That's the problem here."

While A can play, and does quite well for limited times, playing with kids her age, she socially and emotionally is at a 7/8 year old level, and when she gets these chances she shines. She enjoys herself so much and they do to. It is neat to watch true friendships develop. My child told me yesterday. "Mom I am not just having friends now, I am having relationships." Oh what she has always been seeking. And the age of these friends, a just turned 8 year old and a 7 year old. They accept her for who she is and they share so many of the same interests, that hours spent together pass quickly by full of enjoyment for both of them.

Now this is not to say that she doesn't have friends her age or younger....she does, but it is to say that the deeper level of friendships she has always longed for is finally in her reach and she is thrilled. This is one of those reasons I love homeschooling. She has the opportunity to interact with kids of all ages, not just other 4-5 year olds in her classroom and is able to find her true fit. I am a happy mom because I see my child truly happy in a way I had seen her hurt for so long.

5 years old

Saturday my baby turned 5. FIVE! I have no idea how this happened. How fast the years have flown by. Just yesterday she was a baby in my arms, and today she is this amazing little person. Sweet, kind, energetic, beautiful, caring, brilliant....okay, I'm not biased am I? LOL.

She had a intimate party with 2 families of friends Friday and on her birthday morning she had a big special present waiting for her...more on that later, and then headed to one of her friend's birthday party.

A always has very ummm.....creative I guess you could say, ideas for her birthday cakes. When she was 2, she wanted a 3D Thomas the Train cake. At 3, she asked for a "present cake" When I asked what that was she said . "A cake that is a cube, that's a square in case you didn't know mom, and is decorated like a present." I will never forget those words. Surprised me coming from a not yet 3 year old. Last year she asked for two human body cakes...one showing the circulatory system and one showing the skeletal system. And this year, well this year she wanted an atom cake. ...with "an odd number of electrons, I think 5 would be best mom, since I am turning 5" So I got to work creating Boron LOL!

So without further ado....the Atom cake.....

I have learned from past experiences and this time drew a diagram for prior approval LOL! She chose the colors and was quite pleased.

Happy birthday my sweet child. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. I thank God everyday for blessing us with you.
